The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol will certify credits for the projects which produce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. The CDM allows a wide range of GHG emission-reduction projects inclding renewable energy (e.g. hydro, solar, geothermal), energy efficiency, fuel switching, waste management, transport, industrial chemical, mining and forestation. CDM transactions in 2005 will lead to an estimated reduction of 397 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (Mt CO2e) (source: Point Carbon). Reducing GHG emissions will help mitigate global warming and climate change. Moreover, CDM projects must help achieve the sustainable development objectives of the host country.
